And for a bonus they all feature actresses and actors over 50. Actually, not all of these shows are British, but I was looking for shows that are smart and relatively low on violence--I've watched Ripper Street and I've read piles of Scandinavian noir, but I just can't handle anything that violent anymore. There's something about the weather getting colder that causes me to crave British mysteries.

Have you seen Shetland yet?

I'll be frank, the scenery is the very best part, but the acting and plots make for comfort watching. The police act and look like human beings. There's an orchestra full of accents to appreciate, as well as 55-year-old Dougie Henshaw being smart, short, and thoughtful (as well as the single father of a lively teenager). There's even a realistic plot featuring an actually Deaf actor.

Since the tiny landmasses are nearer to Bergen than Edinburgh, the culture is an interesting smush of Scottish and Viking. These distant islands are home to oil and gas resources, as well as human smuggling, so the ridiculously high crime rate required to make 21 episodes isn't totally unbelievable.
