First things first, Le Cabaret Grimm
http://www.performancelaboratory.com/lecab.html
is lively, funny, and has a real cabaret feel. I would definitely recommend going to see it, especially as you will get to hear and see Mighty Tiny. The bad news is that tonight's show is the last show, it begins at 8 p.m. at the
Boston Center for the Arts, 539 Tremont Street, in Boston's Sounth End, tickets available online at

or by phone at 617-933-8000

The second part of the cabaret is the musical "Le Cabaret Grimm" itself, but the first half of the cabaret is called Hubbub, and consists of a number of local acts, including the extremely funny and gender-bending Johnny Blazes. There was also a performer doing things with juggling and whips.

What really blew me away, though, was the band, Mighty Tiny, which was the first thing I heard when I walked into the theatre. Alexx and I were amongst the first people in, so we barely missed a note. The first song was a psycho-bluesy Tom Waits-kind of number, and their next song or two all had that kind of dark cabaret, neo-noir fantasia feel. There were also numbers with a hopped-up Django Reinhardt gypsy-jazz thing going on.

The MySpace page
http://www.myspace.com/mightytinyband
describes their music as "A masked musical melting pot of macabre," and this reminds me, I didn't even tell you about the commedia masks they all wear, except for the drummer, who wears something more like a deathmask. The drummer/persionist also seems influenced by Tom Waits, because he plays all sorts of sounds include thing architecture.

The band doesn't just wear the masks though, they take on personae, and the while show is also a performance.

By the third song I turned to Alexx and asked, "If they have a CD, will you buy it for me?"
"Yes."
"And the t-shirt?"
"Yes."
"And the lead singer?"
"No, I will not buy you the lead singer."
I tried to look pouty but the music was too awesome.

So during the intermission, Alexx dashed out to the lobby, and when he came back he said, "They had a CD. And a t-shirt. And the lead singer followed me back."
It turned out the lead singer was in front of me, and he gave me a glossy photo of himself (he doesn't talk while in persona). Squee!

There are a number of YouTube videos, and if you join the mailing list, you get a mp3

The good news is that Mighty Tiny is playing at the Middle East on May 22nd, and Alexx and I are going. Anybody else want to come with?
