Independent Living Training for Blind/Visually Impaired Young People

Have you recently moved into your own home/apartment and could use some extra support and training? Then Getting Settled might be for you!

Getting Settled offers young people with visual impairments up to six months of support and learning opportunities when they move into their own home. The instruction takes place at your home and in your community. Most of the teaching is based on what you determine you need to learn in order to feel successful living on your own.

This may include:

• Independent Living Skills
• Orientation and Mobility
• Assistive Technology
• Making connections in the community
• A peer mentor who is in touch every week to offer support and guidance
• Monthly collaborative meetings with staff and mentors to see how things are going, make changes, set priorities, etc.

The ideal candidate:

o Is motivated to live on their own but could use this level of extra support.

o Has strong "executive functioning" skills to manage living on their own, such as the ability to focus attention, prioritize, and plan, and the ability to learn independent living skills to live on their own, including Personal Care management skills when applicable.

o Is able to keep themselves safe.

The project is offered for candidates who are blind or visually impaired, with or without other challenges, who are living on their own for the first time or giving it another try. Participants must be eligible to receive Social Rehabilitation (SR) support from Massachusetts Commission for the Blind (MCB) and have plans to live in the Boston metro area within the next couple of months. Priority will be given to those who do not have the benefit of family support.
