My WorldCon trip has been cancelled, which means I have a WorldCon membership to sell, if anyone is interested in purchasing it.
As it turns out, I will be having some reconstructive surgery done on my right eye, which means I get to wear an eye patch for a month or so this summer. I've begun putting together my pirates songs playlist; feel free to post suggestions.
During my Tuesday appointment with my ocularist (the technician who makes my prosthetic eyes), he noticed that my right eye was in need of some reconstructive surgery. A consultation on Friday at the Lahey Clinic with the surgeon who performed the surgery on my left eye back in 2000 confirmed that yes, the surgery was warranted. It seems the silicone orbital implant

which had replaced the eyeball back in 1980 when I had an

(LJ user LadySprite gave a really detailed description of this surgery which I failed to find; granted, she perfromed the surgery on a dog, but it was way more info than any of my ophthomologists would give me).
Basically, the implant is exposed and a "patch" has to be put on it. This involves getting a transplanted

either human or animal such as a cow, horse, or pig. Just think, the phrase "in a pig's eye" could have a whole new meaning for me.
After the surgery, the surgeon places a temporary perforated shell called a conformer in the eye in order to maintain the shape and sews the eyelid shut. I thought of asking if they could do this for both eyelids so I could take pictures of undead zombie Kestrell, but people in the medical profession often fail to understand my sense of gothic aesthetics, not to mention humor, so I restrained myself. Then the surgeon puts a tight bandage on the eye and they send me home. Unless, as in the past, I immediately have a drop in my white cell count and they have to keep me overnight for antibiotics, oxygen tubes, and observation. The surgeon asked if I wanted a local anesthesia so I could be awake for the surgery but, though I pride myself on being kind of tough, I really don't want to be awake while people stick their fingers in my eye socket and move stuff around.
The badnage comes off in a couple of days and then it takes about six weeks for the site to heal. After that, I'll probably go back to my ocularist again and get a new set of eyeballs. I'm trying to decide what my new eye color should be: maybe green? violet? My ocularist tends to object to my changing my eye color because, as he says, "people will know." I should tell him about my blog and maybe explain the concept of being out.
So, even though I know I will never get my ocularist to agree to some of these options, I was wondering what people thought the coolest set of eyes would be:
1. Molly from Neuromancer =mirrorshades
2. The Corinthian from Sandman =flames/fangs (my favorite)
3. functioning lasers
4. KestrellKam =implanted Webcam
5. Liz Taylor =violet
6. David Bowie =mismatched green/blue
7. Dark Kestrell =all black

Date: 2009-06-13 03:53 pm (UTC)I recently got to choose between a local and general anesthesia, and the shortening of healing-time made me want to go that route whenever in future. It's not like you can see the surgeons working on your eyes, right?
/gruesome.

Date: 2009-06-13 05:28 pm (UTC)I take it thermochromic plastics (as in mood rings) are not available? Because that would be so convenient for when you're hot under the collar or pinioning someone with an icy gaze.
