I darned my first sock!
Nov. 5th, 2014 02:29 pmI realize that this might not be very exciting, but I am pretty pleased that I managed to
1) save my new purple alpaca socks (alpaca being one of the few wools which I am not allergic to at this point), and
2) squelching my "but my sewing isn't perfect" anxiety. Seriously, how many people are going to be looking at the inside seam of my sock?
Sometimes the inner-critic monster is so over-reaching that he just looks ludicrous. It's like one of those B horror movies that totally terrified you as a kid, and then you see it years later and are just baffled about what seemed so scary before.
Also, I like picturing my inner critic-monster as a guy in a cheap rubber suit with an obvious zipper.

Date: 2014-11-07 12:56 am (UTC)I've almost darned a sock once, and it's an awesome skill. There was a time when all our clothing was made by our hands or hands known to us. Not only does a darning mushroom make the job go faster, but it's an excellent massager for an arthritic palm or arch.
Were you able to find purple alpaca wool?

Date: 2014-11-07 05:06 pm (UTC)Greetings, Jesse!
I did not have a darning mushroom; is that the same thing as a darning egg?
I am not very hard on socks and shoes, so I dont have a lot of opportunities for darning socks, but I love these purple alpaca socks. I save them for when I am sitting in my reading chair, because they are really oversized on me, and the toes flop about like Dopey the dwarfs sleeves.
I did not have purple alpaca, but now that you mention it, perhaps I will get some for the future. I cheated and just used a double strand of purple thread, as the problem was that the toe seam had pulled apart, not an actual hole in the knitting itself.
Oh, and the purple alpaca socks match my giant purple alpaca blanket that I bought last winter. Originally, I thought spending one hundred dollars on a blanket was a splurge but, as I live in a drafty Victorian house and have rheumatoid arthritis, I soon realized that it was, aside from my books, the most well-spent hundred dollars ever.
I havent been spending that much time online, as you probably guessed from my lack of postings, but I have scanned an impressive amount of books this year, and have even read some of them. Im kind of like a squirrel, a very literary squirrel, storing up books for when it is too cold to sit in the drafty corner where my desk is.
What have you been reading? Ive been trying to read more books written by writers outside of English-speaking countries. One of my favorite groups are those crazy French tricksters of the oulipo. I threw a Paris café birthday party for myself this past summer, and trimmed a purple beret with purple ribbon and beads, so it was very festive. Also, we had amazing food, including lots of pastry. And we drank green cocktails out of test tubes (I love how my friends indulge me). The day after Halloween, a fellow horror fangirl and I threw ourselves a Dia de los Muertos party, complete with vegetarian chorizo and rice and a cheesy Mexican horror movie (okay, it was based ona Mexican zombie superhero but it was spoken in English).
Now its cold and rainy and I am headed into hibernation season.
cyberhugs, Kes

The reply was:
Obvious zipper and clearly holes in his socks.
