We're halfway through Banned Books Week! Welcome to our thousands of new fans. Have you had a chance to check out our "mapping censorship" Google map, where
you can see where and why many of the book challenges took place in the past few years. (Note: the
ALA Office for Intellectual Freedom records many more challenges than this every year - the ones on the map have received media attention.)

There are hundreds of challenges to books in schools and libraries in the United States every year. According to the American Library Association (ALA),
there were at least 348 in 2010; the ALA estimates that 70 to 80 percent are never reported.
