To repeat: disability stories are rarely about disability, and this one is just as much about the desire to make money--and to make better soldiers/cyborgs--as it is about improving the lives of people with disabilities. Hmm, are they talking cochlear implants?

I loved a recent short story about the disabled person whose ADD-managing implants are paid for by their military service, and then the maintenance contract runs out .... couldn't find it. Ring any bells?

No, but I haven't been reading a lot of science fiction lately--I'm still trying to finish the Disabled People Destroy Science Fiction issue of Uncanny Magazine. If it was an older story, I would have guessed the author was John Varley--he's one of the few writers who seemed to address the question of "how does an unemployed disabled person pay for this cutting edge tech?".
