Hugo nominations and disability
Apr. 5th, 2019 12:10 pmEnthusiastic cheers regarding the Hugo-nominated Uncanny Magazine's "Disabled People Destroy Science fiction" issue
https://uncannymagazine.com/uncanny-magazine-issue-24-disabled-people-destroy-science-fiction-cover-and-table-of-contents/
Note that the Kickstarter for this project won the
D Franklin Defying Doomsday Award, which recognizes
disability advocacy in science fiction literature.
I also want to send congratulations to Archive of Our Own on receiving a Hugo nomination

AO3 is where I spent most of last summer while I was shifting my sleep schedule from being an early bird to a night owl.
One thing that totally thrilled me was discovering how much
disability fanfic

there is now. And a lot of it is really good stuff that reflects the real-world struggles PWD have in the world.
Still, it came as a surprise to find that
this essay I wrote about disability fan fic

might be

my most cited

piece of media studies writing.
Note: that last article is in an inaccessible Power Point format and, yes, irony.
Another awesome intersection of disability and fan fic is the Harry Potter ASL project—you can see it in action here

and read a recent article about it

Also, there is a British group of deaf fans who taught Daniel Radcliffe how to do some signing

Date: 2019-04-05 04:35 pm (UTC)I don't know if it's helpful to you or not, but in my recent "personal notes on where to find the various works nominated for the Hugos" post, when I note something as "available in audio" what I mean is that it's downloadable from NLS BARD.

Date: 2019-04-05 04:56 pm (UTC)Right now I'm finding it difficult to access NLS audio, due to a crappy ebook reader, but thank you for the link of accessible format nominations.

Anything to do with third-party players makes me want to back away slowly. I hear a lot of horror stories.
